Lake Geneva Badger hammered Union Grove, 59-20, Friday to limber up for next week’s showdown with Waterford for the undisputed Southern Lakes Conference football title.


Badger High rolled for 476 yards on the ground to improve to 7-0 in Lakes and 7-1 overall as it clinched a tie for the championship. However, the Badgers must beat Waterford (7-1, 6-1) to gain the outright title.


Peter Krien gained 177 yards on 12 carries, including a 35-yard touchdown run, for Badger. Teammate Chris Walked added 111 yards on 10 carries, including touchdown runs of 4, 5 and 35 yards.


Union Grove held a 14-7 lead on Tate Koestev’s 90-yard kickoff return, but the Badgers routed the Broncos 31-0 in the second quarter to seal the victory.

n Waterford 66, Delavan-Darien 10—Waterford blitzed Delavan-Darien with 52 first-half points on its way to a resounding victory in a battle of Southern Lakes contenders.


In knocking off the defending champion Comets (5-3, 4-2), the Wolverines (7-1) improved to 5-1 in the conference and set up a title showdown next Friday at Lake Geneva Badger. The Badgers (7-1, 6-0) have clinched a title tie, but Waterford can share the championship by winning the regular-season finale.


Greg Steffens rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns to lead Waterford’s charge past Delavan-Darien. David Welch added 64 yards and two touchdowns for the Wolverines, who lost a 40-39 heartbreaker in overtime against the Comets last year.


Delavan-Darien scored first this time on Alex Limones’ 24-yard field goal, but Waterford answered with 59 straight points.

n Burlington 42, Elkhorn 21—The Demons pulled away from a 27-21 lead going into the fourth quarter to defeat the host Elks in a Southern Lakes game.


Burlington, 2-4 in the SLC, 3-5 overall, scored 15 fourth-quarter points. Jayden Essman threw his second TD pass of the game, a 3-yarder to Kasey Solofra to put Burlington ahead 33-21.


Parker Thompson then scored his third touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run to complete the scoring.


Elkhorn’s Rory Johnson rushed 13 times for 141 yards, including a 4-yard TD run.

The visiting Falcons led 7-6 in the first period before the Panthers took over and stayed a game behind first-place Lake Geneva Badger in the conference race.
