— Kristin Zeilinger and Maddie Theisen, Janesville Parker High School’s soaring No. 1 doubles tennis team, rolled through the WIAA Division 1 sectional Wednesday at Lake Geneva Badger to gain a third straight trip to the state meet.

Zeilinger and Theisen defeated Madison East’s Heidi Thiel and Maggie Douglas, 6-1, 6-2, in the Flight 1 quarterfinals to earn their trip to state. The pair defeated Milton’s Marianne Moser and Elizabeth Murphy, 6-4, 6-4, and wrestled a 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory from Lake Geneva Badger’s Riely Mikrut and Lily Fisher for the sectional title.

The sectional’s top four individuals in Flight 1 singles and doubles and the champions in Flight 2 qualify for the Oct. 13-15 state individual tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Zeilinger and Theisen will take a sterling 29-1 record to the individual state meet.

“I’m very happy for them,” Parker coach Justin Long said. “To be going to state with a 29-1 record is a plus for Parker and Janesville tennis.’’

Long said the senior tandem learned from its only loss of the season, which came against Middleton’s Lindsey Heidel and Darcy Hogendorn for the Big Eight Conference championship last Saturday.

“The Middleton match taught them a lesson,” Long said. “They took that into this week’s play.’’

Long was pleased Theisen and Zeilinger showed their mettle in the sectional championship match.

“They lost the first match 3-6 and were down 4-1 in the second,” Long said. “They started playing as they could.’’

Meanwhile, Parker’s Ashley Lindsey and Elizabeth Severance defeated Beloit Memorial’s Yuma Carpenter-New and Hailey Warner, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, for third place in Flight 3 doubles.

Janesville Craig’s Kaylee Rossing defeated Payton Scherff of Mukwonago for third place in Flight 2 singles and the Cougars’ Sarah Gray took third place in Flight 4 with a 6-4,

3-6, 6-1 win over Sophia Grandi of Burlington.

Craig’s Brooke Negus lost to Burlington’s Carolyn Smith for third place in Flight 3 singles.

“We did all right,” Craig coach Bill Peyer said. “I’m happy with the way we played.’’

Madison East earned 37 points for the sectional title and a trip to the Division 1 state team meet at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Oct. 21-22. Parker finished fourth with 17 points, and Craig tied with Lake Geneva Badger, each with six points.

Division 2

Liz McGrail, the Rock Valley Conference No. 1 singles champion from Big Foot/Williams Bay, and Hannah Runez, the Rock Valley runner-up from Whitewater, each qualified for the Division 2 state meet with their performances Wednesday in the Whitewater Sectional.

McGrail defeated Alex Breitzman of Columbus, 6-0, 6-0, in a Flight 1 opener to earn a state berth. Runez defeated Kristie Fischer of Ripon, 6-0,

6-1, in an opener for a ticket to state.

McGrail held her command over Runez, 6-4, 6-4, for a semifinal victory, but McGrail lost to Sara Murphy of Madison Edgewood, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) for the Flight 1 title.

Runez defeated Olivia Gallagher of Lodi, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, for third place. Michala Schramm of Whitewater defeated Camryn Kellogg of Lodi, 6-0, 6-0, in the Flight 2 singles opener and lost to Courtney Burke of Madison Edgewood, 6-1, 6-0, in the title match.
