— Authorities might never know why a Madison woman was driving the wrong way on Interstate 43 on Monday night, leading to a double-fatal crash.

Amy C. Hayes, 58, Madison, and Evis Obando, 19, Beloit, died in the crash about three miles east of Beloit.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the crash at 8:11 p.m., two minutes after the Rock County 911 Communications Centered received a report of a vehicle heading west in the eastbound lanes of I-43.

Investigators learned Hayes was driving her 2007 Volkswagen Beetle the wrong way in the eastbound lanes when it collided with a 2008 Chevy Impala driven by Obando. The impact disabled both vehicles before a semitrailer truck driven by Michael Davis, 50, South Milwaukee, collided with the Impala, ejecting Obando, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Office press release.

William Hamlin, 29, Clinton, swerved his 2008 Kia to miss the Impala but collided with the semi when he tried to get back into his lane of traffic, according to the release.

Hamlin was treated and released at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Obando's passenger, Jorge Murillo, 20, Delavan, was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Davis was not injured.

The eastbound lanes of I-43 were closed for nearly five hours after the crash.

The crash is under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol and its reconstruction team.
