— A foundation with roots in Janesville has started a fund that will help ready buildings in small Wisconsin communities for designation in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Wisconsin Historical Society announced this week that the Janesville-based Jeffris Family Foundation has donated a $500,000 endowment to the Wisconsin Historical Society to establish the Fuldner Heritage Fund.

This fund is named in honor of Henry Fuldner, who served on the Jeffris Family Foundation board for 30 years. Fuldner died in 2009 at age 62.

The Fuldner fund will support preparation of National Register of Historic Places nominations in small Wisconsin communities or rural areas not eligible for other funding. The fund will help properties get discovered and gain historic preservation tax credits, grant funds and consideration in federal and state planning.

The National Register is the official national list of places deemed significant in American history and culture.

The Wisconsin Historical Society will begin contracting for nominations from the Fuldner Heritage Fund in September 2012.
