— The northbound lane of Interstate 43 near Beloit was closed for more than two hours Monday night after police say a driver traveling in the wrong lane caused a fatal wreck.

Rock County dispatchers said the crash occurred at about 8:10 p.m. near mile marker 3 in the northbound lane of I-43. Authorities didn't have a full report on what caused the wreck, but they believed someone driving south in the northbound lane crashed into another vehicle.

Sgt. Gary Bauer of the Wisconsin State Patrol said a semitrailer truck and another car then hit those vehicles. Bauer also confirmed that at least two people were killed and two others were injured, including one with non life-threatening injuries.

The wreck led authorities to shut down the northbound lane for at least two hours, according to the state Department of Transportation. Southbound traffic on Interstate 90 and all drivers from Beloit were blocked from I-43. Police also closed the Hart Road ramp between Beloit and Clinton.

A helicopter initially was dispatched to the scene but later was called off.

The Rock County Communications Center said the Rock County Sheriff's Office, state patrol, Beloit Police Department and Town of Turtle Fire and Rescue responded.
