Janesville Cougars tennis team ties for first
ELKHORN Janesville Craig’s girls tennis team finished in a three-way tie for first place Monday in the WIAA Division 1 subsectional at Elkhorn.
Craig High, Mukwonago and Burlington collected 12 points each to hold the lead into Wednesday’s sectional at Lake Geneva Badger. Janesville Parker earned 10 points for fourth place.
The sectional winner advances to the state team tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on Oct. 21-22. The sectional’s top four individuals in Flight 1 singles and doubles and the champions in Flight 2 qualify for the Oct. 13-15 state individual tournament, also at Nielsen Stadium.
Qualifiers from the Stoughton Subsectional join those from Elkhorn in the Badger Sectional, which begins at 8:30 a.m.
“We feel pretty good,” Craig coach Bill Peyer said. “But the sectional Wednesday is going to be tough.’’
Peyer expects Madison East out of the Stoughton Subsectional to offer the toughest competition. The Purgolders and Watertown each scored 22 points in Monday’s subsectional, and all team points carry over to the sectional.
“East will be the biggest dog we have to take down,” Peyer said.
East advanced in Flight 1, 3, 4 singles and all three doubles at Stoughton. Watertown also had six qualifiers.
Craig notched three singles winners, including Kaylee Rossing in Flight 2, Brooke Negus in Flight 3 and Sarah Gray in Flight 4. The Cougars’ Courtney Spiegler lost her Flight 1 qualifying match to Beloit’s Kathleen Murphy, 6-1, 6-0.
Rossing must win twice at Badger to advance to the individual state meet.
Meanwhile, Janesville Parker’s Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zeilinger bounced back from suffering their only loss of the season in the Big Eight Conference No. 1 doubles title match last Saturday. They defeated Craig’s Miranda Mishleau and Leah Voskuil, 6-0, 6-1, in the Flight 1 qualifying round at Elkhorn.
Theisen and Zeilinger will advance to the individual state meet with an opening-match victory Wednesday at Badger. Also for Parker, Ashley Lindsey and Elizabeth Severance qualified for the sectional in Flight 3 doubles.
Peyer said Craig’s three singles winners gained experience from adversity this season.
Rossing, Negus and Gray moved up a level during the season when No. 1 Spiegler was injured.
“The good thing was the girls had a chance to play up,” Peyer said. “It helped them understand they can play at the next level.’’
