Marquette and UW-Milwaukee roll
Former Madison Memorial High School athlete Vander Blue scored a career-high 26 points and was one of five players in double figures as No. 21 Marquette rolled to a 95-73 victory over Winthrop in the opening round of the Paradise Jam Tournament on Friday.
Blue made his first nine shots from the field, including two 3-pointers, for the Golden Eagles (3-0). His runner with 14:10 left started a 14-0 spurt that helped Marquette run away in the second half.
Senior guard Darius Johnson-Odom picked up his third foul in the first minute of the second half but still finished with 20 points for Marquette. Chris Otule added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Andre Jones made four
3-pointers and scored a career-best 29 points for the
Eagles (0-3). Reggie Middleton added 10 points.
The Golden Eagles will play Mississippi, a 63-59 winner over Drake, on Sunday in the tournamentís second round. The championship game is slated for Monday.
-- UW-Milwaukee 62, IUPUI 49óKyle Kelm and Ryan Allen scored 14 points apiece as host UW-Milwaukee pulled away in the second half to defeat IUPUI.
James Haarsma added 11 points and Evan Richard 10 for the Panthers, who are off to their first 3-0 start since the 2004-05 season.
Kaylon Williams added game highs of eight assists and eight rebounds.
Marcellus Barksdale was the only player in double figures for the Jaguars (1-2), scoring 12.
Trailing 31-23 at intermission, the Jaguars opened the second half on an 8-0 run and tied the game on Stephen Thomasí basket with 17:34 to go. But Allenís layup with 15:01 left broke a 35-35 tie, and Milwaukee outscored IUPUI 27-14 to coast home.
The Jaguars shot just 15 of 50 (30 percent) and were outrebounded 40-28.
The game was part of the Spartan Classic constructed by Michigan State.
