JANESVILLE What it is: A 10,000-square-foot strip mall is under construction on an outlet to Slumberland Furniture and Hobby Lobby, both of which are housed in the former Walmart store at the intersection of highways 14 and 26 in Janesville.
The strip mall will include three tenants, said Gale Price, the city’s manager of building and development services.
Aspen Dental will open at one end of the center and operate in about 3,200 square feet. Founded in 1998, Aspen Dental has more than 300 offices in 22 states.
Mattress Firm, a specialty-bedding retailer, will operate out the middle suite, also in about 3,200 square feet of space, Price said. The company was founded in 1986 by Steve Fendrich, who until 2010 was president and chief operating officer of Simmons Bedding Co., which operates a plant in Janesville. Fendrich has since rejoined Mattress Firm as the company’s chief strategy officer.
Price said AT&T would move into the final 3,200-square-foot space from its current location in the Janesville Mall.
What’s the progress: Aspen Dental is much further along in its build-out than the two other stores, and could open yet this year, Price said.
Cost: $1.6 million, which includes about $1.2 million for the building and $372,000 for the specific build-outs for the three tenants.

The reason there are so many mattress stores in Janesville is because there are HUGE profits in mattresses.

YourNeutralness lazer tag was tried in this town along with indoor soccer in the same building, where Kia Motors is. Apparently it wasn't a big draw then and doubt it would be now.

We don't have a planned parenthood in Janesville that I am aware of, beazulbub.
Is this the issue.
Out off of Center Av was the last location I know of. Used to be downtown long ago!

There are things for kids in this area:
The teen club downtown started by Donte, The Boys and Girls Club, The Bat Cave in Beloit, The ice rink, The skate park in Beloit, the Skatin Station in Beloit, etc.
***
It is not that we dont have places for the kids, it is that the ones we have don't get used. Maybe parents should encourage the kids to go to these places instead of cruising the circuit.

On a side note, maybe somebody should consider building something fun for younger kids and teenagers instead of mattress and cell phone stores. We already have plenty of both. The old Menards building would be perfect for something such as lasertag or maybe even an indoor adventure/waterpark if someone has the time and money to do something like that.
Maybe it would keep kids out of Walmart and keep them from driving up and down Milton Ave every weekend for entertainment.

Personal opinion, it would have been better if they had faced the doors toward Hobby Lobby and Slumberland, instead of the back of the building. It would have felt like a neat little community of stores.

molly49- so true...how many mattresses can people need in Janesville, really? I find it difficult to understand the need for constantly purchasing new items...take better care of what you have and it will last longer....the only way I can see the dental office successfully competing with the other local dental offices is if they use a sliding fee scale so payments are based on ability to pay, so more people can afford their services....

Since moving to the Quad Cities I have become a Panera addict. Love their French onion soup. As for Aspen dental, I work with a guy who got his false teeth there. They look like Mr. Ed's teeth. You'd have to be nuts to go there. I don't know why the city needs more retail space. There enough empty buildings, storefronts, and offices all over town.

The last thing Janesville needs is an Aspen Dental. They tend to start out with a little lower prices to get you in then will load you up with huge treatment plans. With the work being done by numerous different Dr.'s that have little to no experience. I believe they choose Janesville to open their next office due to the economy here and knowing people are dental shopping due to loosing their insurance. Please do not give these people the time of day. I personally know of an Aspen Dental office that closed right in the middle of someones treatment, after they had pre-paid for their services.
