— The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team gave coach Bobbie Kelsey the first unofficial win of her career Thursday night.

Ashley Thomas scored 17 points to lead the Badgers to a 70-54 exhibition victory over UW-Whitewater at the Kohl Center.

Thomas was one of four Badgers in double figure scoring. Senior Anya Covington added 13 points for Wisconsin, while senior Jade Davis and sophomore Morgan Paige added 12 points each.

The Badgers shot 52.4 percent (22-of-42) from the field, but just 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from behind the arc. Thomas hit 6-of-7 from the field and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Wisconsin shot 72.7 percent (24-of-33) from the line as a team.

Wisconsin sophomore Cassie Rochel led all players with 12 rebounds, while Covington added nine boards. The Badgers outrebounded the Warhawks, 39-30.

Kaityn Thill had 15 points, and Mary Merg added 14 for Whitewater, which led 17-10 midway through the first half. UW went on a 20-0 run late in the first half to take control.

"We are extremely proud of the way we played tonight," Whitewater coach Keri Carollo said. "I think we gave a great effort against a very good Badger basketball team. I think Bobbie Kelsey is doing a fantastic job.

"Wisconsin played extremely hard. It was just great for us to see our ladies really step up and compete and represent our program the way that we wanted to, and our conference and Division III basketball."
