— Fire officials and police detectives are investigating a fire Tuesday night that destroyed a two-story masonry commercial building slated for demolition.

“It was too dangerous to get in last night with the roof compromised,” said Larry Hainstock, Janesville Fire Department inspector. “But with no power or gas supplied to the building, no lighting last night and no accidental source of ignition, we obviously believe this is suspicious.”

The cause of the fire was listed as undetermined, according to a fire department news release.

Nine units and 20 firefighters responded at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday to the scene, Lycon, Inc., 1110 Harding St., owned by G.R. Lyons.

Janesville police and the Evansville Fire Department provided assistance. Engines from Milton and Footville fire departments staged at Janesville Fire Station No. 1 during the fire as backfill equipment.

Janesville fire units remained on scene until 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the release.
