— A UW-Whitewater student who left a party around 1 a.m. Saturday was found dead at the bottom of a quarry Monday morning, police said.

Based on an initial investigation, foul play is not suspected. Police said it appears Mark J. Wegener, 20, fell from a ledge and into the quarry.

Whitewater police had mounted an extensive search with the help of other agencies, some searchers using ATVs or horses.

Police said a tip led them to the Whitewater Limestone Quarry, about one-half mile outside Whitewater, at 7:53 a.m. Monday.

Wegener was seen leaving a party at Boone Court and Center Street in Whitewater after 1 a.m. Saturday morning. It is believed he had been drinking at the party, but friends believed he was alert enough to walk home.

Wegener’s home was two blocks from the party. His last cell phone record indicated he got within a block of his home.

His last text before the disappearance was “peace,” an expression he often used.

Family and friends called in the missing report Saturday. His family placed missing-persons fliers throughout town.

An autopsy was scheduled today.
