Slatter paces Janesville Cougars to girls sectional track and field title

— Mark Marsden understands that talent can ease much of the burden for any coach.

So the Janesville Craig High School girls track and field coach was very succinct in describing what it takes to coach sophomore sprinter Maggie Slatter.

“She’s very fast,” Marsden said. “It’s easy to coach a fast kid.”

Slatter displayed her speed in Thursday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional at Lake Geneva Badger, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes and anchoring the 800 relay team that also placed first for the Cougars.

Slatter’s exploits led the Craig girls to a sectional title, following up the regional championship the Cougars captured on Monday at Monterey Stadium.

Craig finished with 89 points on Thursday, 18 clear of second-place Verona and 19 ahead of third-place Waterford.

“It’s been an outstanding year,” Marsden said. “We took second in (the Big Eight Conference meet). We didn’t think we could do that, and we won all our invites, so I’m really proud of the kids.

“It’s a deep team, it’s a committed team. It’s a young team, which is kind of exciting.”

Including relays, the Craig girls sent 12 athletes to the state meet, which will be held June 3-4 at UW-La Crosse. The top three finishers in each event Thursday qualified for state.

Janesville Parker senior Paige Demos took second in the 100 high hurdles with a time of 15.95 seconds to become the only automatic state qualifier for the Viking girls. She placed 10th in that event at last year’s state meet and tied for fourth in the state in the high jump.

Slatter won the 100 sectional title in 12.88 seconds and the 200 in 26.56. Badger senior standout Megan Mulligan finished second behind Slatter to also qualify for state in both events.

This will be the first individual appearance at state for Slatter, who competed in the 400 and 800 relays at state last season. She has run all three sprint events, all three sprint relays, both hurdle events and has competed in the long jump at various points this season.

“It took a lot of self-motivation and a lot of support from (my) teammates and everything,” Slatter said of her success. “I just pushed myself a lot.”

Craig junior Tommy Meister is certainly no stranger to pushing himself, either.

Meister captured both the boys 1,600 (4:23.99) and 800 (1:56.13) on Thursday and also anchored the Cougars’ winning 3,200 relay team.

Meister, who placed second in the Division 1 boys cross country meet last fall, credited maturity for his ability to win both the 1,600 and 800 this year. He qualified for state in the 1,600 last year but ran a poor 800 at sectionals.

“Physically, I’m more mature, but it’s the same thing mentally,” Meister said. “I’m just more experienced, I know what’s going on a lot more this year.

“I can read my body better. I know what I’m feeling, what I need before the race, after the race. It’s just all coming together right now.”

The Craig boys placed fourth with 70 points, as Spencer Hrycay was second in the 3,200 (9:43.65) and part of the winning 3,200 relay team, while Cy Badertscher took first in the long jump (22 feet, 3 inches) and second in the triple jump (44-5.75).

Overall, the Cougar boys will be represented at state in five individual events and two relays.

The Parker boys, meanwhile, notched 72 points for a third-place finish, qualifying for state in five individual events and one relay.

Parker senior Austin Lloyd won the 110 hurdles (15.17), took third in the high jump (6-0) and was a member of the second-place 1,600 relay team to lead the Vikings.

“Well, you’re never happy when you don’t get everybody through (to state),” Parker boys coach Joe Dye said. “But the bottom line is, we’ve still got people standing and going to La Crosse.”

Verona (82 points) edged Kenosha Bradford by a single point to capture the boys sectional title.

Milton senior Nate Hammon had a strong day in the boys field, qualifying for state in four events with a second-place showing in the long jump (22-1.25) and a third-place finish in the 100 (11.38). He was also a part of the Red Hawks’ second-place 800 relay team and third-place 400 relay squad.

Fort Atkinson’s Brian Beaudo, meanwhile, captured a boys title by winning the 400 (49.78).

Other area girls individual winners were Craig’s Sara Ennocenti in the pole vault (10-0), Elkhorn’s Sarah Woelert in the discus (114-5) and Fort Atkinson’s Taylor Bauer in the 1,600 (5:20.15).

Congratulations to all of the state qualifiers. I personally congratulate the Parker qualifiers. I know this paper is focused on Craig, especially after reading this article, but some people care about the 5 state qualifiers from Parker, even though only one of them was personally named in this article.
