Michael McCrone and Emily Legreid have been named the top senior athletes at Janesville Craig High School.

They received the American Legion Athletic Medal, presented by the Richard Ellis Post, at the school’s senior awards ceremony Thursday night.

McCrone is the son of John and Janet McCrone. Legreid is the daughter or David and Teresa Legreid.

The annual Legion award, based on athletic participation and citizenship, has been presented in Janesville since 1922. It has been given at Craig and Parker each year since the school split in 1967 and is in its 24th year as a co-ed award.

Erika Whitson and Matthew Simon received the award Wednesday night at Parker.

Kelsey Kennedy immediately preceded Legreid on the Craig girls Legion honor roll. McCrone follows Michael Spaulding Jr. as Craig’s 44th male recipient.

Legreid earned her Legion honor by winning 10 letters in three sports. She got four in soccer and three each in basketball and swimming.

As a Craig captain, Legreid played on a basketball team this past season that went 20-5 in setting the school record for most wins in a season. The Cougars finished third in the Big Eight and advanced to the WIAA Division 1 sectional finals.

“Mo” McCrone is completing his third year as a letter winner in tennis. He just qualified for the WIAA Division 1 state tournament in doubles after joining teammate Stewart Winter to finish fourth in Flight 1 of this week’s Lake Geneva Badger Sectional.

McCrone also lettered three times in soccer and twice in hockey. He was a team captain in soccer, hockey and tennis this school year and the Cougars’ MVP in soccer.

Along with the Legion awards, Craig’s recognition night honored Mitch Phillips and Michelle Straw as the school’s nominees for the WIAA Scholar Athlete Award. Phillips is the son of Monte and Tanya Phillips. Straw is the daughter of John and Deborah Straw.

Phillips also received the CATS Scholar Athlete Award, the Janesville Youth Baseball Scholarship and the Janesville Youth Football Scholarship.

Ciarra Sroda also received the CATS Scholar Athlete Award. She is the daughter of Michael and Mari Sroda.
