A three-game winning streak came to a halt for Janesville Craig’s baseball team Thursday.

Madison West scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past the Cougars, 11-9, in the Big Eight Conference and regular-season finale for the Cougars.

Craig High (11-14, 5-13) built an 8-3 lead in the fifth, but saw West score three times in the fifth before taking the lead with five in the sixth.

“As has been the case too many times this season, we get to the late innings and forget how to field and throw the ball,” Craig coach Vic Herbst. “We scored nine runs, and I don’t care who you are playing, that should be good enough.

“Our pitching wasn’t sharp today, but we gave some kids that hadn’t pitched a lot some time on the mound.”

Jameson Henning had three hits for Craig and scored two runs, while Cameron Wright, Nolan Stearns and Tom Yaucher drove in two runs each for the Cougars.

“The regular season is over, and now we’ve got a chance for a fresh start Tuesday. We better play solid baseball, or we will be one and done.”

Craig hosts Oregon in a Division 1 regional opener Tuesday at Riverside Park.

-- Memorial 3, Parker 1— Janesville Parker will head into the postseason on a four-game losing streak.

Parker High (11-13) managed only three hits and committed two costly errors in a Big Eight finale against Madison Memorial at Riverside Park.

“We didn’t hit, and we didn’t do much in the field when we had to, either,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “At this time of the year, we shouldn’t be missing the cutoff man or screwing up like we did.

“Maybe the week off will do us some good. “We haven’t played very good baseball the last week or so.”

Jeff Henke drove in Parker’s only run with a double in the second that tied the game at 1-1.

Trent Kobs suffered the lossm despite allowing only one earned run in three innings of work.

Parker receives a first-round WIAA Division 1regional bye and hosts the winner of Tuesday’s game between Oregon and Janesville Craig in regional final at Riverside Park next Friday.
