WCLO weighing options for Conry replacement

JANESVILLE WCLO radio is weighing its programming options after losing the host of its local morning talk show.
Dan Conry, host of “The Dan Conry Show,” hung up his microphone May 20, eight months after he walked into the booth to replace Stan Milam.
Conry did not return a call seeking comment on his departure.
But on his last show, Conry thanked station officials for taking a gamble on an “obnoxious guy from the East Coast” who promised to share his conservative opinions and encourage friendly discussions of differences.
“We didn’t set out to hire a conservative Irishman from New York,” Tim Bremel, WCLO program director, said on Conry’s last show. “We did look very seriously for someone skilled at articulating their thoughts who could put emotion behind the discussion.”
Bremel said the station has not yet decided how to fill the 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. time slot
“I think it’s important to keep the local perspective on the air,” Bremel told the Gazette. “There are certainly issues of local importance, and whether we branch off into state and national issues is up for discussion.
“The show is an important forum for people to weigh in on the local issues that are important to the people we serve.”
In the meantime, WCLO is filling the time slot with guest hosts.

Dan is not the first to leave CLO lately. There have been a lot of people to come and go since Bob Dailey retired as the GM. He ran a tight ship and was respected by his staff. I've been told by station insiders that this is no longer the case with the new GM. And for those of you who do not know it, many staff members are on a furlough program at the station. That's right. The people who get paid the least at Bliss Communications are expected to also take days off unpaid. I'll leave it at that...

Liberals claim to love diversity and an open exchange of ideas. That's only until someone disagrees with them, then the name calling comes out. Just review the comments below by several lefties. Hypocrites!

It was an interesting show with Dan. Of course I did not agree with many of his ideas and thoughts but isn't that what the country we live in is all about. Freedom to voice our opinions even if it is liked by the next person or not. I think Dan and Rose did a very fine job and hope WCLO will find another show host that draws interest like they did.

That's too bad. He was a great replacement for Stan Milam. I couldn't stand Milam with his whimsical, sarcastic approach to spreading socialism over the airwaves. I know we live in the People's Republic but Conry was a nice contrast back to common sense (Paine style).

It really doesn't surprise me that Conry fled JVL. Why did he leave a big market like Minneapolis in the first place to come to a small market like Janesville? He didn't last long here and I'm wondering if he's just a "Job Hopper". I didn't mind his right-wing bling but his constant self promotion didn't have a lot to do with the topics being discussed. I also didn't find him as annoying as Laura Ingram's nightly childish behavior.

tedmlewis and the rest of you lefties....why not hire ED SCHULTZ or KEITH OLBERMAN??? Two guys who can't keep their foot out of their mouth. It seems they are benched for the time being. Liberal talk radio has no listeners and few sponsors, hence NPR and PBS. That's the only places that will take them.

"Dan at least gave logical opposing views the chance to be heard in their entirety." You must have been listening to a different show or never called in. He is the King of cutting people off mid sentance.

WCLO already has a far right wing talk show program (Laura Ingraham). Why not have a little variety, and have a liberal voice? The AM airwaves are awash with far right wing voices, and we do not need more. And it makes sense to have a voice that is more in tune with the working people of Rock County, instead of another Scott Walker praiser.

I didn’t care much for his predecessor (Milam), who had his faults as well. You talk about a guy that cut people off and was condescending in his tone to callers that didn’t agree with him. Dan at least gave logical opposing views the chance to be heard in their entirety. I don’t ever remember previous hosts agreeing to disagree.
I became a frequent listener of him and Rose and grew to appreciate a fresh viewpoint on local and national issues. What his exit is about is that he upset Gazette management too often by being critical of the stories in the paper. Maybe he did it to himself but it was entertaining while it lasted. Why would he give a comment to the Gazette when they helped ended his stay here?
Maybe those hard hitting and controversial topics like garden advice and reminiscing about the old days is what WCLO should stick to? The replacement hosts are like watching paint dry. I’m done with WCLO.

I dont think you need to be intelligent to be on the radio, you just need a big mouth and/or corporate sponsors. See Rush 'the cheating drug addict hypocrite' Limbaugh. Would love to have a job like this one. Unfortunately I am not gonna pay for the schooling that is associated with this profession. Plus NO security. Plus you have to listen to uninformed people make bad points and not curse at them.;)

A guy who couldnt hold an arguement with anyone. It works when youre on radio, you can just push the button and declare yourself the winner. A good radio voice for CLO, but not a very smart guy. Needless to say he hung up on me a few times! LOL thats what happens when you can beat them at their own game. I have been calling talk radio for years and this guy was not a very worthy opponent.

"Gee, guess the "local liberals" couldn't handle any other viewpoint other than their own."
Gee, it looks like "Danny Boy" is the one that couldn't handle things.
The liberals are still here. Danny's the one that cut and run.
Just a right wing blowhard who can't hold a job.

I found this jerk offensive and condescending. He was way off track with what was happening in Wisconsin and the repercussions of Scott Walker's actions. Way too far right. He insulted my profession on more than one occasion. I quit listening to WCLO whenever he was on. Glad he's gone!

I enjoyed this fellow. Unfortunately, most people in this town won't be happy until Ken Regez comes back and talks about growing flowers and cooking rice, and other useless trivia no one cares about.
