— One bad inning cost Janesville Craig’s baseball team Saturday.

Peter Strommen’s grand slam highlighted an eight-run sixth inning for Madison East as the Purgolders rallied past the Cougars, 12-8, in a Big Eight Conference make-up game.

Craig (8-11, 4-10) led 7-4 in the sixth, but East (2-10 in the Big Eight) hit the Cougars with an eight-spot in the bottom of the inning.

“We let them (East) hang around by leaving too many men on base earlier in the game,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “We had the chance to bury them early and didn’t.

“As has been the case in quite a few games this season, one bad inning cost us.”

The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the first, keyed by Nolan Stearns’ two-run single. Riley Quinn, who drove in four of Craig’s eight runs, doubled in the fifth to make it 7-4.

Cody Steed suffered the loss. The senior righthander surrendered eight runs on six hits in five innings of work.

Jameson Henning scored three times for Craig but also allowed four runs in the sixth without retiring a batter.

Craig will host defending Big Eight champion Middleton on Tuesday at Riverside Park.
