— Two Janesville Craig errors led to two unearned runs and helped Madison Memorial defeat the visiting Cougars, 4-2, in Big Eight Conference baseball Thursday.

Craig High coach Victor Herbst said the defeat was disappointing since his team defeated the Spartans, 16-4, in the teams’ first meeting.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second when Cameron Wright scored on Brandon Hughes’ squeeze bunt.

Craig went up 2-1 in the fourth when Wright walked, stole second and third and scored on Mitch Perkins’ groundout.

Memorial (7-8, 6-6) tied the game on a Brett Wise homer in the fourth. Two errors in the sixth led to the two runs that put the Spartans ahead.

“Defensively, we broke down again today,” Herbst said. “Plus we had poor approaches at the plate. It’s very disappointing.”

The Cougars, 4-9 in the Big Eight and 7-10 overall, play a nonconference game at Lake Geneva Badger at 4:30 p.m. today.
