— Janesville Craig used a big inning and strong pitching from Paige Weber to hammer the visiting Middleton Cardinals, 8-2, Tuesday in Big Eight Conference softball.

The victory lifted Craig High to 8-5 in the Big Eight and 9-7 overall.

Weber entered the game allowing 15 hits, three runs—two earned—16 strikeouts and four walks in her last 27 innings.

Middleton’s Haley Schreier reached Weber for a two-run homer in the first inning, but Weber was lights out the rest of the way. She blanked the Cardinals (6-6 Big Eight) on three hits, notching eight strikeouts and walking none.

“After Schreier hit that two-run homer, Paige shut them down,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “Our defense played well behind her.’’

The Cougars settled the issue in the fifth inning with a seven-run onslaught. Craig banged out eight hits—six in a row—and benefited from two errors, sending 11 hitters to the plate.

“We had six great at-bats,” Bayreuther said. “Our approach at the plate was as good as we have had all year.’’

Leigh Grall had a bases-loaded triple for three RBIs, and Kylie Clark had a two-run double to highlight the Cougars’ big inning.

Craig plays a makeup game at Beloit at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and faces Janesville Parker on Friday afternoon at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex.

-- Sun Prairie 7, Parker 0—Hanna Running had Janesville Parker’s number in a Big Eight game at Sun Prairie.

The Sun Prairie pitcher threw a no-hitter to lead the Cardinals past the visiting Vikings. Sun Prairie is 9-2 in the Big Eight.

Parker coach Jenni Seisser said the no-hitter is an extension of her team’s continued lack of offense.

“I think we’re batting well under .200,” Seisser said. “We’re not seeing the pitches. And defensively, we’re not fielding and throwing as well as we should be this late in the season.

The Vikings, 2-10 in the Big Eight and 3-13 overall, play Madison East at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex on Thursday, then play Janesville Craig there on Friday.
