— UW-Whitewater’s 26-win softball season has paid off in an NCAA Division III tournament berth.

The Warhawks (26-10) have received an at-large bid and play Coe College (34-9) of Iowa at 2 p.m. Thursday in a double-elimination regional tournament hosted by Central College in Pella, Iowa.

In other first-round games, top-ranked Linfield College (41-2) of Oregon plays Anderson College (28-13) of Indiana at 10 a.m., Fontbonne University (29-8) of Missouri plays Washington University (31-10-1) of St. Louis at noon, and Benedictine University

(37-6) of Illinois plays Central (35-7) at 4 p.m.

The winner of the Pella Regional joins seven other regional champions in the May 20-24 final series at Salem, Va.

Whitewater did not play any of the Pella Regional participants this season, but the Warhawks defeated Coe in 2008 and 2009 regional games.

The Warhawks, who tied for second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season, will be making the school’s 15th national tournament appearance since 1981. Whitewater finished fourth in the final series in 1983 and 1984, third in 1985, and second in 1986, 1987 and 2008.

Whitewater’s last NCAA appearance was 2009. Brenda Volk, the Warhawks’ head coach since 1999, has been with a Whitewater team as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
