UW-Whitewater lost 6-3 to UW-Eau Claire in a WIAC softball tournament opener here Friday.

The Blugolds scored all six of their runs in the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie.

Whitewater starter Jessica Stang (19-4) pitched a no-hitter through six innings, but she allowed a leadoff walk in the seventh. A throwing error and a single broke the tie to give Eau Claire a 1-0 lead. Three straight bases-loaded singles and fielder’s choice followed to give the Blugolds a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Whitewater’s Jordyn Gaza and Haley Krueger each hit RBI singles and Kate McDonnell added an RBI sacrifice fly, but the rally was snuffed with a strikeout with two runners in scoring position.

Whitewater (26-9) must defeat WIAC reguls-season champion UW-River Falls at 10 a.m. today to remain in the six-team, double-elimination tournament.

In other opening-round tournament games, River Falls defeated UW-Oshkosh, 4-1; UW-La Crosse defeated UW-Superior, 4-1, and Superior eliminated Oshkosh, 5-4.
