WHITEWATER

UW-Whitewater scored a combined 21 runs on 24 hits Friday and earned a WIAC baseball doubleheader sweep over UW-La Crosse.

The Warhawks won the opener 10-4 and took the second game 11-6.

Whitewater (28-8) improved to 17-5 in the WIAC and remained a game behind first-place UW-Stevens Point with only today’s doublheaders remaining, making it the 10-ranked Warhawks’ last chance to catch the Pointers.

Matt Beyer, a Janesville Parker graduate, had an RBI single in the second to score Travis Wessels and gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead in the Friday’s opener. They were in command the rest of the doubleheader.

Whitewater’s Jeff Donovan starred at the plate and on the mound for Whitewater. He went a combined 4-for-6, including a solo homer in Game 1 and a grand slam in Game 2 en route to seven RBIs.

Donovan notched his ninth victory without a loss in Game 2, allowing four runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked three and had six strikeouts.

Riley Tincher (8-2) notched a complete-game victory in the opener, allowing four run on 11 hits. Tincher notched six strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

Whitewater hosts La Crosse again at noon today at Jim Miller Stadium, with the facility being dedicated in the former coach’s honor during a ceremony between games.
