— Janesville Craig played lock-down defense, but was handcuffed on one hit Tuesday in a 2-1 loss to visiting Madison La Follette in Big Eight Conference softball.

The loss dropped Craig to 5-5 in the Big Eight and 6-7 overall. La Follette improved to 7-2 in the Big Eight.

“It was the first game we played without making an error,” said Craig coach Dan Bayreuther. “On defense, we were on top of our game, but on offense not so much.’’

That’s because La Follette starter Nicole Newman, a

6-foot, 2-inch freshman, owned the Cougars at the plate. Newman struck out 15 and walked none.

“She threw a rise ball, and you couldn’t touch ’em,” Bayreuther said. “It looks like it’s coming right down the (middle), and then it goes right over your head.’’

Stephanie Perleberg reached on a bunt single in the fourth inning to break up the no-hit bid. Perleberg stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the Cougars’ run on a wild pitch.

La Follette took the lead for good in the top of the fourth on an RBI double.

Craig starter Paige Weber allowed two runs on eight hits to take the loss. Weber notched two strikeouts and walked a pair.

Craig travels to Madison East on Thursday.
