— Janesville Craig committed seven errors en route to a 15-2 loss in Big Eight baseball Monday at Middleton.

“Our defense let us down,” said Craig High coach Victor Herbst. “We committed seven errors. Any time you do that in the Big Eight, you’re going to have a hard time winning.”

Middleton’s Drew Haack pitched all five innings in allowing four hits. He also hit a three-run homer in the first to give the Cardinals an early lead as they improved to 4-3 in the conference.

Craig starter Cody Steed took the loss. He worked two innings and allowed four hits and eight runs, but only two of the runs were earned.

The Cougars scored their two runs in the fourth inning. Jameson Henning and Charlie Meyer hit back-to-back singles. After a strikeout, Charlie Miller walked. Henning scored on a passed ball, and Meyer scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Riley Quinn.

Craig (6-6, 3-5) hosts second-place Verona at 5 p.m. today in a Big Eight game at Riverside Park.
