Edgerton escapes Clinton's upset bid; Brodhead, Lakeside advance

Clinton High’s girls basketball team did more than narrow the gap from the first time it played Edgerton this season.


The Cougars also most closed it—and then some—Friday night.


After losing 76-37 to the Crimson Tide during the conference season, Clinton pushed the Rock Valley North champions to the limit before Edgerton emerged with a 56-54 victory in the WIAA Division 3 regional semifinals.


In breaking a two-game losing streak, Edgerton (20-3) earned the first 20-win season in the program’s history and advanced to a regional title game against Rock Valley South champion Brodhead (16-7) at 7 tonight at Clinton. The winner plays Lakeside Lutheran (17-6) or Lake Mills (17-6) next Thursday at Fort Atkinson in the semifinals of the Waunakee Sectional.


After trailing the whole way, Edgerton took a 36-35 lead over Clinton in the third quarter and increased its advantage to 11 points with five minutes left in the game.


The Cougars roared back, but could not take the lead. Clinton made 18 of 30 free throws. After hitting 11 of its first 12, Clinton went 7-for-18 the rest of the way.


Edgerton’s Meggie Schmidt scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the second half. Teammate Brook Ferrell added 11 points, including a pair of three-point goals in the fourth quarter.


Megan Lantz scored 22 points, and Mallory Niemann scored 16 for Clinton.

-- Brodhead 53, Big Foot 43—Carly Mohns scored 14 points to lead Brodhead’s Rock Valley South champions into tonight’s Division 3 regional final game tonight against Edgerton.


The Cardinals (16-7) outscored the visiting Chiefs in every quarter. Mariah Mohns added 10 points in the victory.


Molly Kovarik scored 18 points, and Courtney Spangler added 10 for Big Foot (6-18).

-- Lakeside 77, Poynette 32—Alex Anthon led Lakeside Lutheran’s 13 scorers with 16 points, and the Warriors advanced to tonight’s Division 3 regional final against local rival Lake Mills at McFarland.


The Warriors (17-6) opened a 44-16 lead by halftime. Hannah Hackbarth scored 12 points, and Patti Rupnow added 11 for Lakeside.


Poynette finished 6-18, while tonight’s winner at Mcarland plays Edgerton or Brodhead next Thursday at Fort Atkinson in the semifinals of the Waunakee Sectional.

The Trojans (20-3) play Racine St. Catherine’s (17-6) in a 3 regional final at 7 p.m. today at Waukesha South. The winner advances to Waukesha West Sectional.


Breanna Gaspervich led the Trojans with 14 points, and Rachel Atchinson added 10.
