'Dudes for Diapers' help absorb baby care costs
That's why the Janesville man has joined Dudes for Diapers, a new program of the YWCA of Rock County.
"It's a giving club that's helping women dealing with domestic violence through the simple provision of basic needs—mainly diapers," said Jeff Bealles, Y fund development director.
"Diapers are really important to the shelter. A lot of women who come with their children need them, and they're pretty expensive," he said.
It costs about $1,200 a year to diaper a baby, Bealles said.
That's why a local group of men committed to ending domestic violence came together to form Dudes for Diapers.
"We started as a grassroots effort to support the YWCA and offer men an opportunity to be involved, even though we have some women in the club," Bealles said.
Many women who flee domestic violence have little or no money, Bealles said.
Dudes for Diapers has about 20 members. It also supplies baby wipes, ointment and other basic child needs to mothers, children and families living in domestic violence shelters, Bealles said.
Becoming a Dude means committing to a monthly gift of just $10 or an annual gift of $100.
"In-kind gifts of diapers and gifts above and beyond this also are, of course, accepted and greatly appreciated," Bealles said.
Members receive a custom lapel pin with the Dudes for Diapers logo, periodic club updates through e-mail and an invitation to the March 18 baby shower.
"It's a good day for a men's baby shower. It's also the second day of the first round of NCAA final four basketball tournament," Bealles said.
Huth said the program is a chance for men to help kids and mothers in need.
"It doesn't take a lot to make a huge difference in somebody's life," said Jon Wangerin, a Dudes for Diapers member and longtime YWCA advocate. "If I can do that for $10 a month, that's easy."
