— John R. Schmidt, 47, Milton, remained in critical condition Monday at University Hospital, Madison, after a Sunday snowmobile crash, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Schmidt was flown to the hospital by helicopter Sunday after crashing his snowmobile on Clear Lake, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Office press release.

Schmidt was riding his 2002 Yamaha snowmobile west on Clear Lake northwest of Milton at 4:38 p.m. when he struck a mound of snow. Upon impact, the snowmobile became airborne for about 170 feet and ejected Schmidt causing him to land on the ice and tumble another 130 feet. The snowmobile skidded 330 feet from where it landed on the ice, according to deputies.

Speed was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation, according to the press release.
