— A 5K run/walk to benefit ataxia-telangiectasia research will be held Saturday, July 9, at Starin Park, 504 Starin Road.

That same day, a coast-to-coast bike tour raising money for the same purpose will pass through the city.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to research the disease, which becomes apparent in children and causes loss of muscle control and often makes them dependent on a wheelchair by the age of 10.

Regan Pourchot, one of the riders making the 4,000-mile trek across the country, teamed up with AT Children's Project after meeting 6-year-old Madux Devitt of Whitewater, who was born with the disease. Pourchot hopes to raise $20,000 to help find a cure.
