Orfordville man killed in car accident Saturday

— A rural Orfordville man was found dead in a cornfield Saturday morning after a car accident in far western Rock County.

Kevin L. Mills, 42, of 162 N. Knutson Road, Orfordville, was driving west at a high rate of speed at 6:20 a.m. on Footville-Brodhead Road west of Severson Road when he lost control of his 1987 Pontiac Firebird, according to a news release.

A neighbor reported the accident, which was in Spring Valley Township between Brodhead and Orfordville. The car was on its side 30 feet into the cornfield on the north side of Footville-Brodhead Road, reports state.

Mills was the only person in the vehicle.

Orfordville Fire and EMS personnel got to the scene at 6:34 a.m. and found Mills 9 feet from the vehicle, according to a news release.

According to police reports, Mills’ car left the road and went into the ditch on the north side of the road. The car traveled 457 feet in the ditch before hitting a pipe covered with stone and concrete.

The car was airborne for 50 feet, hit the ground and rolled 51 feet and was airborne another 19 feet before coming to rest on its side.

At some point during the crash, Mills was ejected through the vehicle’s windshield.

He died as a result of severe head and neck injuries and was pronounced dead by Rock County Chief Deputy Coroner Louis Smit, according to police reports.

Mills was not wearing a seatbelt. According to the news release, it is not clear whether alcohol was a factor. The incident remains under investigation.
