— Four people were injured in an explosion after a man threw a bag full of fireworks into a bonfire at a party early Sunday in Center Township, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The sheriff’s office reported a group of people was sitting around a bonfire at 5707 N. Weary Road in Center Township before 2 a.m. Sunday when Scott T. Bonnell, 41, of Fond du Lac, threw a bag full of “some form of pyrotechnic material” into the fire.

The bag exploded in the fire, burning Bonnell and three other people, including Tanner D. Hall, 24, of Janesville, Amy L. Brzezinski, 25, of Janesville and Kayln B. Schremp, 25, of Edgerton.

Hall and Brzezinski were transported to University Hospital, Madison, for burns to their hands and face. Both were listed in good condition Sunday afternoon. Schremp was treated and released at Stoughton Hospital.

Bonnell was transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville, but refused treatment. He was arrested for recklessly endangering safety, according to the sheriff’s office.

A sheriff’s investigation at the scene revealed a large amount of fireworks had been set off during the night. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, and additional citations are pending.
