Clinton High’s baseball team scored first, but the rest was a disappointing story for the Cougars in the WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinals at Monroe.

Madison Edgewood wiped out a 2-0 deficit after the first inning with an 11-run outburst in the third. Sixteen batters came to the plate for the Crusaders against three Clinton pitchers, and they went on to a blistering 15-2, five-inning win Tuesday on an equally blistering 94-degree day.

“They hit the ball hard on a couple ground balls. We had errors on both of them, and that kind of opened the door,” Clinton coach Scott Cernek said of Edgewood’s big inning.

“We lost our edge and couldn’t control the pressure,” he said. “It was unbelievable.”

Edgewood then made believers out of Wisconsin Dells by stinging the Chiefs with four runs in the seventh inning to win the sectional championship game, 5-4. That gave the Crusaders a third straight trip to the state tournament, where they’ll play Spooner at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.

Wisconsin Dells advanced to the sectional final at Monroe with a 5-2 win over Richland Center.

Tyler Chesmore’s double off the third baseman’s glove in the first gave Clinton its 2-0 lead over Edgewood. The Cougars then had clear sailing until the decisive third.

Edgewood began its outburst by loading the bases with nobody out. Jack Reiland’s infield hit brought the Crusaders within 2-1, and they tied it with a bases-loaded walk. After batting around almost twice, Edgewood had an 11-2 lead, then added four more runs in the fourth.
