Janesville Craig has earned another shot at Janesville Parker in baseball.

The Cougars shut out Oregon, 4-0, in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal game at Riverside Parker on Tuesday.

The victory put the Cougars into Friday’s 5 p.m. regional final game against Parker (11-13), which swept Craig (12-14) in the Big Eight Conference season and had a bye Tuesday.

Friday’s winner advances to next Tuesday’s sectional at Riverside.

The Cougars used timely hitting and steady fielding to down the Panthers. Craig did not commit an error.

“I said all season that if we play a complete game, we can compete with anybody,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “Tonight, we got it.”

Sophomore Brandon Hughes started for the Cougars. He went into the fifth, allowing just three hits and a walk.

“He went further than we had hoped,” Herbst said. “We had hoped for four innings, and he almost went five.”

Cody Steed came on in the fifth and finished the game. Five of the seven outs Steed recorded came on strikeouts.

All of Craig’s runs came with two outs.

Catcher Charlie Meyer drew four walks in the game. Courtesy runner Dylan Hoskins made the Panthers pay for those walks.

Meyer walked in the first inning. Hoskins came on and stole second and came home on Tom Yaucher’s two-out single.

Meyer walked again in the third. Hoskins entered the game and stole second. Hoskins scored on Cameron Wright’s solid single to right.

The Cougars added two important runs in the fifth. Riley Quinn and Meyer walked. Charlie Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt, which paid off in the two runs when Wright dropped a hit into short center.

“That was a huge sacrifice bunt by Charlie Miller,” Herbst said. “When we got to the seventh inning, a four-run lead is a lot different than a two-run lead.”
