Legion remains perfect in tourney
The winner of the Beloit-Kenosha Merchants game at 11 a.m. today plays Janesville at 1:45 p.m., and must defeat Janesville twice for the title. Beloit receives an automatic state berth as host of the state tournament.
Janesville rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to erase a 3-1 Beloit lead. Janesville managed four hits, including Charlie Meyer’s two-run single and Taran Kobs’ RBI single.
Visiting Beloit, which was ranked No. 1 in the state at the end of the regular season, bounced back with five runs in the seventh for an 8-7 lead.
Beloit walked a pair and hit two batters in the bottom of the inning as Janesville scored four runs on one hit for the final margin of victory.
“It was an exciting game,” Janesville coach Bob Schenck said. “It was a good victory for us.’’
Janesville reliever Trent Kobs allowed two runs on two hits though the final 2 2/3 innings to gain the victory. Janesville starter Brandon Hughes allowed six runs on seven hits.
“Hughes did a great job pitching,” Schenck said.
Taran Kobs went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Meyer had two hits with an RBI, and Brady Brandt added a pair of hits and an RBI.
