Janesville's 14-year-olds advance to regional

The Janesville 14-year-olds are headed to the Babe Ruth Ohio Valley Regional.

The local team scored eight runs in the third inning en route to a 12-6 win over Eau Claire in the title game of the state tournament in Green Bay on Saturday.

Janesville did not lose in four games.

“They deserve it,” said coach Ron Kobs. “The kids have been playing outstanding ball.”

Jarod Hoffarth continued Janesville’s great stretch of pitching. Hoffarth went 6 2/3 innings and struck out three.

“He had command of his fastball,” Kobs said. “He kept their guys guessing.”

Connor Bowen went 3-for-4, while Nick Blomgren, Kevin Brandt, Alex Faust and Alex Marro each had two hits in Janesville’s 13-hit attack.

Bowen had five RBIs, while Brennan Olin, Blomgren and McCauley Cox each had a double. Brandt had a homer, while Bowen had a triple.

The Janesville squad will leave for Robinson, Ill. on Thursday and the tournament begins Saturday.

Janesville posted two victories in Eau Claire to advance to the Babe Ruth baseball 13-year-old state championship game at noon today against Eau Claire.

Janesville bounced back from a loss Friday with a must-win 7-5 victory over Green Bay and a 5-4 win over Eau Claire.

Hunter Yerke’s two-run scoring suicide squeeze and Sam Iverson’s RBI single in the third inning gave Janesville a 4-2 lead.

Green Bay tied it 4-4, but Janesville scored on Iverson’s suicide squeeze and a walk with the bases loaded to take the lead for good at 6-4.

Connor Perkins went 3-for-4 and Zach Bailey added a double to lead Janesville’s six-hit attack.

In Game 2, Bailey followed Perkins’ single with an RBI double to score pinch runner Jake Hackett in the sixth inning to lift Janesville to the victory.

Bailey and Perkins combined to hold Eau Claire to five hits. Bailey recorded five strikeouts and Perkins added two.

The Janesville 11-year-old squad set itself up for a No. 1 seed by defeating Harris Township (Ind.), 12-0, Saturday at the Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional tournament at Galesburg, Ill., on Saturday.

The local team finished pool play with a 3-0 record, which included a bye, and two shutouts in games played. The seeding for the 11-team single-elimination play was determined late Saturday after pool play was completed.

The top five seeds earn byes in today’s early action. Janesville likely will play tonight.

On Saturday, Nick Cramer pitched five innings of one-hit ball, striking out two and walking two. Justin Burke pitched the final inning, allowing a walk and a hit.

Noah Berghammer went 3-for-4 with a double, Cramer went 2-for-4 with a double and homer, and Sam Garvoille had a double.

Burke and Sam Urquart each added two singles.
