Janesville is one victory away from winning the Babe Ruth 14-year-old state tournament baseball championship after defeating Eau Claire, 2-1, Friday in Green Bay.

Janesville must win one of two games today to advance to the Ohio Valley Regional next Saturday in Robinson, Ill.

Janesville’s Connor Bowen’s two-out RBI double in the sixth inning scored Brennan Olin with the winning run. Janesville survived an Eau Claire threat in the seventh inning. Eau Claire had the game-tying run on second base with one out, but Bowen came on in relief to get the final two outs on a ground ball and a popup.

“Eau Claire is a top-level team,” Janesville coach Ron Kobs said. “They play solid defense, and they put the bat on the ball, but our pitching came through as it’s come through all week.”

Olin laced a single in the second inning to score Alex Faust to give Janesville a 1-0 lead. Olin and Faust accounted for four of Janesville’s six hits.

Eau Claire scored five runs in the second inning and a two in the third to take a 7-3 lead.

Janesville rallied for five runs in the seventh for the final result.

“Seven errors and four hit-by-pitch were too much to overcome,” Janesville coach Tom Davey said. “They made two sacrifice bunts, and we didn’t get an out on either. You can’t keep giving away outs and expect to win.’’

Erik Woelfle went 3-for-3 and drove in all three of Janesville’s runs. Janesville was held to five hits.

Janesville plays Green Bay at noon today in the loser’s bracket. A victory would pit Janesville against Eau Claire at 3 p.m.
