McDonald wins State Am title

— Mike McDonald of Germantown fired a 1-over-par 72 Thursday to win the 110th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship golf tournament at Maple Bluff Country Club.

McDonald, a recent graduate of Marquette University, finished at 1-over 285 to earn the title in the 72-hole tournament.


Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay shot a 2-over 73 to tie for second, a stroke back with Ricky Hearden (72) of Green Bay. Schultz missed a 5-foot putt on No. 18 that would have tied him for the lead.


Janesville's Matt Behm led area finishers, tying for 13th at 8-over 292 after a final-round 1-under 70, his best score of the tournament.


Andrew Morrison, who will be a junior at Edgerton High School, tied for 15th after a final-round 78 gave him a 9-over 293 total.


Both Behm and Morrison qualified for next year's State Am by finishing among the top 25.


Third-round leader Chris Meyer of Madison, a member of the University of Wisconsin golf team, slipped into a tie for seventh after a final-round 77 left him four strokes back at 289.


Fort Atkinson's Evan Wartgow tied for 27th at 13-over 297, while former Edgerton High standout Mike Hesselman—who plays out of West Bend—tied for 36th at 15-over 299.


Austin Gaugert of Lake Geneva tied for 40th (300 total) after a 76 Thursday, while Dan Ozga of Edgerton and Curt Langille of Lake Geneva both finished in a group at 302, tied for 51st.


Ryan Garske of Lake Geneva tied for 69th at 309.
