Janesville had to settle for a split in the Babe Ruth 15-year-old state tournament Wednesday in Sauk Prairie.


Janesville won its play-in game, 7-1, over Green Bay Green, but lost 10-1 to Cross Plains. Janesville plays at 2:30 p.m. today in the double-elimination tournament.


It was all Janesville in the game against Green Bay Green. Janesville pounded out nine hits, including Collin Powers’ two-run homer and Cullen Osmond’s RBI triple. Both came in the fifth inning and gave Janesville a 5-0 lead.


Powers dominated from the mound, allowing just two hits and posting 10 strikeouts.


In the loss to Cross Plains, Janesville starting pitcher Darin Brewster was the victim of seven errors. Cross Plains scored seven unearned runs.


Cross Plains pitchers held Janesville to three hits.


“We roasted in the summer sun,” coach Bob Getka said. “But that’s what happens when you have to play a play-in game.’’

14-year-olds

Conner Bowen and Jarrod Hoffarth each hit three-run homers to lead Janesville to a 12-1 victory over Wausau in six innings in the 14-year-old state tournament Wednesday in Green Bay.


The Janesville 14s had eight hits. Bowen and Alex Marro had two hits each. Charlie Platts added a double.


Hoffarth held Wausau to five hits. He posted one strikeout and walked none.


Janesville plays the winner of the Bayport-Stevens Point game at 6:30 tonight.

13-year-olds

Janesville used a pair of three-run innings to defeat Middleton, 8-2, in the opening game of the state Babe Ruth 13-year-old tournament in Eau Claire on Wednesday.


Janesville plays in the second round of the double-elimination tournament today.


Middleton took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an unearned run, but Janesville responded with three runs in both the second and third innings.


Sam Carlson and Chase Nyborg each had an RBI singles in the second inning, and Connor Perkins had an RBI double and Hunter Van Zandt an RBI single in the third.


Zach Bailey pitched six quality innings as the Janesville starter.


“His pitch count was very, very manageable,” said coach Tom Davey.


Davey said his team handle the heat well.


“They didn’t think twice about it,” Davey said. “That’s something we talked about all week.”
