Gladiators, Nighthawks hit the road Saturday
The Rock County Gladiators and Janesville Nighthawks will be on the road this week in Great Midwest Football League action.
The Gladiators, who have won their last three games, travel to Aurora, Ill., on Saturday to play the Kane County Chaos in a 7 p.m. contest.
The Gladiators rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the visiting Illinois Spartans, 32-28, last Saturday at Milton High School. Danny Roberts hit Brent Silha with TD passes covering 36 and 38 yards to open the Rock County scoring.
Byron Moss led the Gladiator defense with two interceptions. The last one came in the final minute to stop the final Spartans’ threat.
Roberts is among the league leaders in quarterback rating, rushing and scoring.
The former Milton High standout leads the league in quarterback rating at 150.96. Roberts has completed 56 of 106 passes for 949 yards and 11 TDs. He has thrown six interceptions.
Roberts is tied for third in league scoring with 30 points. Rock County’s Jermar Ayers is tied for sixth with 24 points.
Roberts ranks fourth in rushing with 268 yards on 41 carries and five touchdowns. His longest run has been 48 yards.
Defensively, Rock County’s Nick Hammon is tied for third in the league in sacks with nine.
Moss now has three interceptions, which ties him for seventh in the GMFL.
Rock County kicker Derek Wickhem has four field goals, which ties him for the league lead. Wickhem has made four of five field-goal attempts and is nine of 10 in conversions.
The Nighthawks, who are looking for their first GMFL victory, play the Illinois Spartans on Saturday.
Janesville’s David Harper ranks second in the league in receiving with 16 receptions for 349 yards and four touchdowns. His 24 points ties him for sixth in the league scoring.
Nighthawk quarterback David Fredericks has completed 59 of 142 passes for 651 yards and eight touchdowns.
Fredericks also ranks third in punting with a 36.6 average on 11 punts.
Janesville’s Samad Nou ranks seventh in kickoff returns with an 18-yard average on nine returns.
Both local teams return home next Saturday, July 23. The Gladiators host the Beloit Titans, while the Nighthawks host the Chicago Colts.
