13-year-olds open district play with win

Janesville’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth baseball tournament team opened district play Wednesday with a 9-3 victory over Sauk Prairie.


Janesville had nine hits and did not commit an error. Connor Osmond and Chase Nyborg combined to hold Sauk Prairie to four hits.


Nyborg’s leadoff triple and Hunter Vanzandt’s two-run single fueled Janesville’s four-run rally in the sixth inning for the winning margin.


Janesville plays Middleton at noon today.

15-Year-Olds

Madison West’s three-run seventh produced an 11-10, walk-off win over Janesville’s 15-year-old Babe Ruth baseball tournament team in a district opener Wednesday at Cross Plains.


Janesville overcame an 8-1 deficit to take a 10-8 lead in the top of the seventh on Darin Brewster’s run-scoring double and Will Theisen’s RBI single. West then battled back in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out home solo home run and won the game on a fly ball over Janesville’s drawn-in outfield.


Collin Powers had eight strikeout in five innings, and Theisen struck out two more in two innings to highlight Janesville’s pitching. Cullen Osmond, Theisen and Brewster each had two of Janesville’s 12 hits.


Janesville plays Reedsburg at noon today. The district’s top three teams advance to the state tournament.

Cal Ripken tournament

Janesville’s 10 year-old youth baseball team rolled to a pair of victories Wednesday to open the Cal Ripken state tournament at Darlington.


Janesville blanked Bay Port, 12-0, and topped Belleville, 14-2.


Janesville had 13 hits against Bay Port and 19 against Belleville. Janesville pitching held Bay Port and Belleville to two hits apiece.


Janesville plays Stevens Point at 6:30 p.m. today to complete pool play in the 14-team tournament.
