— David Cullen is president and CEO of J.P. Cullen & Sons, one of the oldest construction companies in America.

His son, Dan, is site superintendent for the family-owned business, headquartered in Janesville.

Together, the Cullens are teaming up to lead the United Way of North Rock County’s 2011 fundraising campaign.

Ron Ochs, president and CEO of the local United Way, praised the father/son team for stepping up to take the reigns of this year’s program.

“David’s got a lot of experience with this. He’s done this before,” Ochs said. “His community involvement has always been extremely high. So we felt his skills lended itself to what we need to have accomplished in this campaign.

“Danny can help his dad, and this is an opportunity to get him involved in some more community activities,” Ochs added. “I think the father/son combo are looking forward to working together. We’re fortunate to have them say yes to chair this. This is a positive thing for us.”

The campaign officially kicks off in early to mid-September, Ochs said.

Typically, the campaign raises about $1.2 million to fund 80 programs. No goal has been set as of yet, but it will be determined within the next couple weeks, Ochs said.

“We’re now in dialogue about developing goals,” Ochs said. “That will be forthcoming in a couple weeks. It’s important to make sure we’ve got the right players and we certainly want the Cullens to be involved in any discussion we have about goals.”

David and J.P. Cullen have a history of supporting United Way.

When David led the campaign in 1991, $1.5 million was raised. He also served on United Way Board of Directors from 1991-94 and was board chairman in 1994. He served on the Janesville City Council, was a HospiceCare board member and chairman of the American Heart Association heart walk.

David also has been active with the YMCA, UW-Madison Family Business Center, Associated General Contractors of Greater Milwaukee, St. Joseph Catholic Church of Edgerton and United Way.

Campaign cabinet members who will help the Cullens move the campaign forward this year include: Bill Alt of Alliant Energy, Kevin Apfel of Schneider Apfel Schneider & Schneider Funeral Home; Scott Fischer of Baker Tilly; Jon Wangerin of M&I; Mark Saunders of Fagan Automotive; Rich Gruber of Mercy Health System; Lori Stottler of Rock County; Gary Bersell of KANDU Industries; and Mary Frederick of United Auto Workers/General Motors.

Awesome combo. This is good for UWay and good for Janesville area community. It's nice to see someone young stepping up. These are tough times and volunteers and donations are even more impactful. Thank you for taking the lead.
