— An Elkhorn woman and her two children are without a home, their possessions and much hope for the future after a fire Sunday night.

Shirley Kaminski and her children—a 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl—were vacationing in Chicago when the fire destroyed the house she was renting at 318 N. Wisconsin St. She said Monday that she is “devastated.”

“I lost everything—my kid’s toys, our clothes, our furniture—everything,” she said.

Kaminski said she does not have insurance, and even before the fire she was just scraping by on the Social Security payments she receives because of a disability.

“I’m just beside myself right now. It’s a lot to take in,” she said.

Kaminski has not been told the cause of the fire. The Elkhorn Fire Department could not be reached for comment.

The children are staying with their father, Kaminski said.

Asked how she will get by, she said, “Pray to God?”

A recorded message at (262) 374-3973 provides information for those who would like to help the family.
