— UW-Whitewater suffered a convincing 66-47 loss to host UW-Stevens Point in its bid to pull within a half-game of first-place in the WIAC women’s basketball race.

It was the No. 9-ranked Warhawks’ second loss to the No. 7-ranked Pointers, who improved to 10-0 in the WIAC and 17-2 overall, while Whitewater fell to 7-2 and 15-3.


Stevens Point gained a 28-18 first-half lead. The Pointers opened a 33-18 lead to start the second half and cruised to their 10th straight victory while snapping the Warhawks’ win streak at 10.


Dana Thompson scored 13 points and was the lone Warhawk in double figures. Ashley Averkamp scored 19 points, and teammate Britta Peterson added 17 for Stevens Point.


Whitewater hosts UW-Stout at 6 p.m. Saturday.
