— A six-goal outburst in the first period was more than enough for the Janesville Bluebirds on Tuesday night.

Janesville’s high school co-op team got a hat trick from Cody Stettin en route to an 8-2 Big Eight Conference win over the Madison Eastside Lakers at Hartmeyer Ice Arena.

The Bluebirds (10-4-1, 6-2-1) led 6-1 after the first period, and got goals from Brett Lessner and Stettin in the second and third periods.

“We could’ve played a lot better than we did,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “There’s too much room for improvement for us to walk away from this game and think we’re ready to play with the big boys.

“You hate to not take anything positive away from a win, but we have to get better if we want to compete with the better teams.”

Janesville scored two short-handed goals in the second period, including Ron Lindgren’s breakaway goal on a rare 6-on-3 advantage for the Lakers, who had pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.

The Bluebirds will host Hartland Arrowhead in a nonconference game Thursday night at 7 at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.
