— Kerry Storbakken likes the way his Janesville Craig High School girls basketball team is playing.

When he looks at the upcoming schedule, he smiles even more.

The Cougars shut down host Sun Prairie, 44-24, in a Big Eight game Friday night, boosting the second-place Cougars to 8-2 in the conference and 12-2 overall.

“Our team chemistry is so good,” Storbakken said. “You can just tell the kids enjoy playing together. They’re sharing the ball.”

That was illustrated by the balanced scoring Friday. Eleven players scored, but no one reached double figures.

Senior Emily Hinman led Craig with nine points.

“No one is caring who’s scoring,” Storbakken said. “They’re making the extra pass, putting the ball in and playing defense. They’re getting after it.”

The Cougars took control by outscoring the Cardinals 11-1 in the second quarter to take a 19-5 halftime lead. Sun Prairie was held without a basket for an 11-minute stretch, spanning the second and third quarter. Craig’s biggest lead was 25 points.

“We played great defense in the first half,” Storbakken said. “(Sun Prairie) plays that slowdown game, and our defense is good.”

The Cougars enter the final stretch of the regular season knowing they won’t have to leave the city limits. Of Craig’s final eight regular-season games, seven are at home and the other is at Parker.
