Big Eight title eludes Craig wrestlers
The Cougars gained three wins in the Big Eight Duals at Beloit but lost two, including a pivotal 38-35 setback against Sun Prairie.
Craig High and Sun Prairie were tied for first place going into Saturday, but the Cardinals won all five of their matches to clinch at least a tie for the conference title.
Craig defeated Madison La Follette, 48-25; Madison Edgewood, 74-6; and Madison East, 77-5. The Cougars also lost to Beloit Memorial, 42-40.
“It was one of those days where anything that could go wrong, went wrong,” Craig first-year coach Mark Mullen said. “We had one kid get hurt, another get sick and some costly pins that we couldn’t afford to give up.
“But it was still a positive day in many ways. I can’t say enough about our four seniors and the job they did today.”
Jamie Kumlien and Chris Pierce earned the 100th wins of their careers, while Siven Furseth and Kyle Upmann both went 5-0.
Craig will wrestle at crosstown rival Janesville Parker on Friday night.
