Volunteers raising funds for Haiti trip
The mission to Les Cayes is being conducted through the church. The group will leave May 28 and spend a week in the city, which is about 122 miles west and a five-hour drive from Port-au-Prince.
Most of the damage occurred in the capital city, but Les Cayes is filled with refugees who fled Port-au-Prince looking for food and work.
“The need for shelter and food has been on an increase, and our plan is to help build the Bible institute Facilities for Haitian pastors so they can reach the people with hope and skills that will help them rebuild their communities and their spirits,” said Roberta Haakinson, one of residents traveling to Haiti.
Most of the volunteers taking part in the mission have backgrounds in construction, and members plan to build shelters with the help of Haitians. Haakinson said with the goal is to teach the Haitians building and computer skills.
“They definitely need skills,” Haakinson said. “They need hope.”
The group is bringing building materials along on the trip, including toilets, plumbing and welding supplies, and items needed to build beds.
All money raised through fundraisers will pay for airfare, building materials and costs to ship the materials.
A group of local volunteers under the direction of Pastor Sean Christensen, formerly from Janesville, will embark May 28 on a mission trip to Haiti. For more information, e-mail email@example.com.
