School open-enrollment period coming up
Parents who want their children to attend a school district other than their home district next fall must apply during February.
The application period for open enrollment, also known as public school choice, is Feb. 7-25.
The state Department of Public Instruction encourages parents to apply online at www2.dpi.state.wi.us/OpenEnrollApp.
Paper applications can be obtained from the Department of Public Instruction or any school district and must be delivered to the nonresident school district during the application period. Hand delivery is recommended.
Applications to attend the Janesville School District are available from the administrative services office at the educational services center, 527 S. Franklin St. They must be submitted to administrative services no later than 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, and a postmark does not constitute timely submission.
Applications turned in before Feb. 7 will be returned and must be resubmitted between Feb. 7 and Feb. 25.
Enrollment in a requested school or program is subject to space and other limitations and is not guaranteed. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent.
Under Janesville School Board policy, students who attended the district under open enrollment the previous year are not required to reapply for the following school year unless they will be entering middle school.
An application is required for each sibling in the family. For example, if a family has one child in elementary school that has been approved for open enrollment and a new student entering kindergarten or preschool for Janesville next year, the new student must apply for open enrollment.
Parents will be informed in April whether their open enrollment applications have been approved or denied. They will hear about school or program placement in May.
