— Ciarra Sroda gave Janesville Craig’s girls basketball team the lift it needed Saturday after a tough Big Eight Conference loss to Verona on Friday.

Sroda scored a game-high 17 points as Craig High defeated visiting Stoughton, 55-45, in a nonconference game.

Sroda, a senior, missed the first six games of the season in suffering from mononucleosis. She played sparingly during a holiday tournament.

Against Stoughton (4-9), Sroda came off the bench and scored seven points, including the first of her four three-point baskets, to give Craig an 18-9 first-quarter lead.

“It was a little different than at Verona when we started out behind 18-3,” Craig coach Kerry Storbakken said. “It was nice to get a spark off the bench.’’

Craig rolled to a 28-21 first-half lead. Sroda sank three more three-pointers in the second half to keep the Cougars (10-2) in the lead.

“It’s nice to bounce back,” Storbakken said after losing 46-34 to Verona. “It’s just nice to see Ciarra out there. She didn’t play an ounce at the start of the season.’’

Emily Hinman complimented Sroda’s outside play with 16 points working the inside.

“Sroda played well outside and Hinman did well on the inside,” Storbakken said. “The two had nice games.’’

Craig returns to Big Eight play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Beloit Memorial.
