— Janesville Craig High School’s boys basketball team stayed within striking distance Thursday night, but the Cougars couldn’t get over the hump in a bid for their first Big Eight victory.

As it turned out, a strong second quarter was enough to carry Verona to a 65-56 triumph, leaving Craig at 0-9 in the conference and 2-11 overall.

The Wildcats (3-8, 3-5) pulled away from a 13-12 edge with a 24-11 advantage in the second quarter and never relinquished the lead, but it took a late surge to finally put away the Cougars.

Craig cut a 37-23 halftime deficit to five points in the third quarter, but the Wildcats ended the period with 7-0 to a 48-36 advantage. The Cougars then rallied to within 55-50 and 57-52 before Verona closed out the victory.

Brian Dalton had 23 points for Verona, as the Wildcats extended the Cougars’ Big Eight losing streak to 29 games.

Craig, which played without starters Cody Dare and Brett Pickarts, got a career-high 23 points from Myles Johnson. Peter Cooney added 13 points for Craig.
