— A Beloit man was listed in good condition at Mercy Hospital on Monday morning after stabbing himself in the neck early Sunday, according to Janesville police.

When officers arrived at 6:45 a.m. at the apartment building in the 800 block of East Milwaukee Street, they found the 26-year-old sitting in the common hallway with his hands behind his body. Officers repeatedly asked him to show his hands, but he wouldn't. When officers began to approach him, he pulled out the steak knife from behind his back and stabbed himself in the throat, Sgt. Aaron Ellis said.

The man was upset about a break-up with his girlfriend. Officers shot him with a Taser after became combative and tried to kick the arresting officer, Ellis said.

The man was arrested on charges of resisting an officer and disorderly conduct while armed and is being detained on an emergency mental commitment, Ellis said.
