— The Rock County Sheriff's Office has new people in high-ranking positions after retirements led to several staffing changes.

Rock County Sheriff Bob Spoden said the office hasn't had this much change since 1994, when several people retired. He said the office would miss the experience from people retiring but would welcome fresh ideas from their replacements.

The sheriff's office has 95 sworn staff members, 81 correctional officers and several administrative positions. The office has 203 employees. It is short two correctional officers and one information technology position.

Everyone from the rank of captain to sheriff has at least a bachelor's degree, with some having a master's degrees, Spoden said.

Recent staffing changes at the office include:

-- Erik Chellevold, a former captain, was promoted to commander after Tom Gehl retired. Chellevold will be commander of the jail. He started as a correctional officer in 1995.

-- Craig Strouse, a former sergeant, was promoted to captain to replace Chellevold. Strouse was hired as a correctional officer in 1994. He will work in the jail division.

-- Brent DeRemer, a former sergeant, was promoted to captain. He began his career in 1990. He will work in the court services division.

-- Doug Coulter, a former deputy, was promoted to sergeant to replace Strouse. Coulter started in 1990 as a correctional officer. He is working third-shift patrol.

-- Kim Litsheim, a former deputy, was promoted to sergeant. She was hired as a correctional officer in 2003. She is assigned to the jail division on third shift.

-- Matt Jacobson, a former deputy, was promoted to sergeant. He was a correctional officer when he was hired in 2001. He will work second shift in the jail division.

-- Shawn Natter, a former deputy, was promoted to sergeant. He was hired as a correctional officer in 1998. He is working in the jail division, second shift.

-- Karl Weberg, a former deputy, was promoted to sergeant. He has been with the sheriff's office for 15 years and previously earned the Medal of Valor for catching bank robbers.
